I have to agree, I like the second one the most . Perhaps a bit too much gray in the center though?

Perhaps if you copied the layer, then deleted half of it like a gradient (such as fill half w/ ohhh say a purple gradient then use select color then delete it) and just set the blending more to invert? just an idea at 3:15am it wouldn't be suprised if it didn't work.
